Ethics, Philosophy and History of Medicine

The research of the department is embedded in the Nijmegen Centre for Evidence Based Practice. It consists of the research line ‘Health Care Ethics and Philosophy’ (programme leaders: Prof dr. H.A.M.J. Ten Have and Dr. W.J.M Dekkers).

The focus of this research programme is on the ethical, philosophical and historical dimension of health care practices. Aim is to analyse and clarify specific health care settings as well as medical and scientific problems by locating them within a broader framework of ethical concepts and theories, historical and cultural transformations, and philosophical and religious traditions.

On the basis of such analysis, normative evaluations are provided in order to contribute to more humane health care practices. Although the programme is based on an integration of ethical, philosophical and historical disciplines, the emphasis is primarily on medical ethics and philosophy.
