This is what we stand forRadboud university medical center specializes in patient care, scientific research, teaching and training in Nijmegen. Our mission is to have a significant impact on health care. We aim to be pioneers in shaping the health care of the future. We do this in a person-centered and innovative way and in close collaboration with our network. In this way, all patients receive the best possible care, both now and in the future. Because that’s why we do it.
The world around us is changing rapidly and so is health care. People are growing older and are developing more chronic conditions. The development and availability of knowledge and technology is increasing rapidly, as is the development of diagnostic tools and treatment options. This leads to increasingly specialized care and specialized health professionals. The affordability and thus accessibility of care are under pressure as a result of these changes.
Good health, the foundation of a high quality of life, is important to everyone. More than ever, the aim is to prevent disease. And when care becomes necessary, we demand the very best, preferably close to home. When it comes to care, patients increasingly expect to play a role as a partner, making decisions in consultation with their doctor.
Radboud university medical center aims to be a dot on the health-care horizon; to be pioneers in shaping a sustainable, innovative and affordable health-care system for generations to come. We also aim to distinguish ourselves as the most person-centered and innovative university medical center and to be recognized as such. We want to be at the very top, both nationally and internationally. We aim to do it better every day by striving for better care, research and education, by furthering our understanding of how to prevent, treat and cure diseases. In brief, we aim to have a significant impact on health care: excelling with and for the patient.
At Radboud university medical center you are heard, seen, respected and treated as an equal.

Towards an academic medical networkRadboud university medical center cannot and does not aim to achieve these ambitions on its own. We are convinced of the strength of a sustainable collaborative network with hospitals, health-care centers and knowledge facilities, primary care professionals and other partners.
We are evolving from a university medical center into an academic medical network. Radboud university medical center is taking the lead in this network, which always starts with a joint vision and shared values, and with respect for everyone’s strengths, profile and identity.
In close consultation with this network, we will reach joint agreements on how to share and develop knowledge, expertise and facilities, we will make decisions on who can provide specific types of care, and how we can jointly add value for each patient.
We will also share research and teaching responsibilities to the best of our ability. Demonstrably high quality and accessibility of care are the priorities in the networks. In this way, we can achieve our ultimate objective: providing the best and most sustainable care for all patients; close to the patient if possible, further away if necessary.
InnovativeWe believe that innovation is the key to the health care of the future. We have created successful innovations in the fields of prevention, diagnostics and treatment based on years of scientific research. And now we aim to go a step further. Renewing the way in which patient care and teaching are organized and offered is important for the health care of the future.
Whether you are nurse or a doctor, a researcher or a professor, a secretary or a dietary assistant: we give everyone the room to innovate. We provide the space and take the responsibility for developing new ideas, experimenting with them and putting promising innovations into practice. We naturally share these ideas across our network and beyond.

Greater control of your asthma fewer hospital visitsPediatric lung specialists Peter Merkus and Jolt Roukema and pediatrician in training Lara van den Wijngaart Paediatric lung specialist Peter Merkus aims to improve asthma care for young people and children by making it easier and more fun to use. How? By putting himself in the position of the child and the parents and by developing the kind of innovative asthma care that he would have liked to receive as a patient.
This inspired him to develop Luchtbrug, an online asthma care solution that results in fewer hospital visits. Thanks to the efforts of him and his team, more than twenty hospitals have started using Luchtbrug as a standard solution in their asthma care.
Ties now has more time to play football with his friends, as he fewer doctor visits. Thanks to Luchtbrug, Ties and his parents more control over his asthma and are more confident now that the asthma team has a clearer picture of Ties’ condition. Ties can submit his own data and contact his doctor whenever he has questions. In this way, Peter and his Radboud university medical center colleagues are putting health care into motion in a person-centered and innovative way.
A better future for Aicha lower risk of malariaA thousand people die every day from the effects of malaria. This statistic inspired researcher Teun Bousema to prevent the further transmission of malaria.
Malaria is spread by mosquitoes. If a mosquito bites someone with malaria parasites in their blood, the parasites enter the mosquito, and the mosquito can then infect other people. Teun and his fellow researchers discovered a medication that kills the malaria mosquitoes after they bite someone. This reduces the transmission of malaria. Teun conducts his research partly in Radboud university medical center’s unique malaria lab and partly in Africa.
Aicha now has a much lower risk of contracting malaria, as does her family. She plays and has fun with her friends. She goes to school. In short, Aicha can now enjoy the future she dreams of. In this way Teun and his Radboud university medical center colleagues are putting health care into motion in a person-centered and innovative way.
“Disease does not stop at national borders, nor do we. We aim to have an impact on international health care.”
