Tessa Frankena Optimising inclusive health research: where expectations and realities meet. Meaningful collaboration with people with intellectual disabilities

Participation is a trending topic: more and more vulnerable groups are expected to actively participate in society. The Dutch Participation Law is subject to this topic. In line, the Radboudumc uses the motto “the patient as partner”. Participation of people with an intellectual disability (ID) in health research is a consequence of this; also known as inclusive health research. Tessa Frankena conducted her PhD research in collaboration with two co-researchers with ID. Inclusive health research was studied by means a literature review, Delphi study, case study and membership categorisation analysis. This resulted in a consensus statement on inclusive health research developed by 17 experts without and 50 experts with ID.
