Xavier Smeets Preventing and predicting acute pancreatitisAcute pancreatitis is one of the most deadly gastroenterological diseases. Therefore, it is important to prevent the disease. In this thesis, the researchers investigated if acute pancreatitis can be prevented by intravenous hydration. They also tried to develop modelst hat predict which patients will go on to develop a severe disease course. They discovered that obese patients have a higher chance of severe disease. Also, by measuring the diameter of blood vessels in the abdomen, and by using special CT scans, they could predict a severe disease course. These results can aid clinicians in the future to tailor treatment to individual patients.
