Lotte Janssen Attention for ADHD: Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy for adults with ADHD

In clinical practice there is a high need for evidence-based psychosocial treatments for adult ADHD to offer alongside the usual treatments, such as pharmacotherapy and psychoeducation. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) is an innovative treatment for adult ADHD. The primary aim of this research project was to examine the efficacy of MBCT in reducing core symptoms. We found that an adapted 12-week MBCT programme and a regular 8-week MBCT programme were both feasible and efficacious in reducing clinician-rated and self-reported ADHD symptoms. For 8-week MBCT, these effects were maintained beyond completion of MBCT until 6-month follow-up. Moreover, we conducted an economic evaluation, which showed that 8-week MBCT was more effective, but also more costly than treatment as usual. This implies that the cost-effectiveness of MBCT depends on the societal willingness to pay. We concluded that MBCT might be a valuable treatment option alongside the usual treatments for adult ADHD.
