Brigitte de Brouwer Essential elements of an excellent nursing practice environment

The shortage of nurses is increasing and puts pressure on the quality of care. Healthcare organizations are considering how to attract and retain nurses. A solution may lie in creating an attractive and productive working environment. This dissertation tests the Dutch Essentials of Magnetism. The instrument measures the presence of the essential elements of a nursing practice environment in order to provide good care. The instrument appears to be valid and reliable for hospitals and offers promising results for nursing homes. This dissertation shows that there is an association between the nursing practice environment and patient results. All eight Essentials of Magnetism are significantly correlated to patient safety, the perception of overall quality of care and the number of observed incidents. ‘Adequacy of staffing’ is most strongly correlated to these outcomes, followed by ‘Patient-centered culture’ and ‘Nurse manager support’.
