Kudakwashe Collin Takarinda The burden of tuberculosis in Zimbabwe: operational research to document and improve tuberculosis control activities in a high HIV-prevalence setting

The world has been ravaged by the twin epidemics of Tuberculosis (TB) and HIV/AIDS for over two decades resulting in high mortality, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. This thesis describes the use of operational research to identify programmatic challenges relating to TB and HIV in order to provide evidence-based solutions for mitigating the high burden of TB in Zimbabwe. We explore in the thesis some important issues: time delays from symptom onset to treatment initiation and associated factors, an aspect critical to mitigating disease progression and community transmission; access to HIV testing and timely initiation of antiretroviral therapy (ART) and their relationship to TB treatment outcomes; risk factors for TB case fatality; and the national impact of ART scale-up on TB case notification rates in Zimbabwe. These findings can help the country to meet the targets of WHO‘s End TB Strategy and also assist Zimbabwe to end TB by 2030.
