Serge Ade Operational research to document and improve case finding and treatment outcomes in patients with tuberculosis in Benin, West Africa

Tuberculosis (TB) is a major global health problem. In Benin, the National Tuberculosis Programme performs well in diagnosing and treating new cases with bacteriologically confirmed TB. To further improve TB case management and learn more about other types of TB, to reduce implementation gaps and to meet the Sustainable Development Goal targets for TB, seven operational research studies were undertaken. Findings were briefly as follows: there was a forecasted decrease in estimated numbers of all notified TB cases in the next few years; weaknesses were identified and proposed solutions put forward for the diagnosis and treatment of clinically diagnosed pulmonary TB, extrapulmonary TB and childhood TB;  the burden of retreatment TB was low but the proportion of patients having culture drug susceptibility testing to inform about appropriate treatment was high; finally, reasons for being lost to follow-up and having delays with scheduled appointments were identified and appropriate solutions were proposed.
