Atherosclerosis is the main cause of having a stroke. Determining the narrowing of arteries (which oftes leads to strokes) of the restriction in 3D can lead to a better risk assessment. The measurement of deformation with ultrasound is also called elastography, and is carried out in this research.

Atherosclerosis is the main cause of having a stroke. An important part of all strokes is caused by the rupture of an atherosclerotic plaque in the carotid artery, causing a blood clot that results in a cerebral infarction. Current diagnosis and treatments are solely based on cardiovascular risk factors and the geometry of the narrowing which leads to an over-treatment of many patients. Determining the narrowing of the restriction in 3D can lead to a better risk assessment. The measurement of deformation with ultrasound is also called elastography. The current 2D elastography has been expanded to 3D, through simulations of a carotid artery model where a new method has been developed to measure deformation in 3D. For verification of this method, a phantom has been developed based on a computer model of the carotid artery. Finally, the method has been applied in a number of volunteers and patients.

Biography

Stein fekkes (1982) studied Medical Engineering at the Technical University of Eindhoven and obtained his Master degree in 2009. He researches at the medical ultrasound imaging center (MUSIC) at the department of radiology and nuclear medicine within the Radboud Institute for Health Sciences.

Stein fekkes (1982) studied Medical Engineering at the Technical University of Eindhoven and obtained his Master degree in 2009. The research in his thesis was performed at the medical ultrasound imaging center (MUSIC) at the department of radiology and nuclear medicine within the Radboud Institute for Health Sciences. Currently, he is a postdoctoral researcher continuing the research of 3D elastography using ultrasound.
