BiographyAd Geurts van Kessel studied Biology at the University of Nijmegen (cum laude, 1976) and graduated (cum laude, 1983) from Erasmus University Rotterdam on a PhD thesis entitled: “Role of the Philadelphia translocation in chronic myeloid leukemia”. In 1989, he moved to Radboud university medical center in Nijmegen where he joined the department of Human Genetics as associate professor to continue his research on cancer genes and later became head of the Cytogenetics division of this department. From 1993, he has also held the role of deputy head of the department of Human Genetics. In 1993, he was appointed as Professor of Tumour Cell Genetics, initially on an endowed chair established by the Dutch Cancer Society (KWF) and since 1998 as full professor. His research has mainly focused on the role of DNA aberrations in the development of hereditary and non-hereditary forms of cancer. He has published over 350 scientific papers (H-index: 69) (www.researcherid.com/rid/A-2810-2010) and supervised 25 PhD students as promoter or co-promoter. He was awarded 36 project grants (14 from KWF). He received the Prof. Van Nieuwenhoven prize for Biology and research prizes from the Dutch Society of Human Genetics and the Simons Fund. He is Honorary Professor at the General Military Hospital (Beijing, China) and high-end foreign expert at the Sun Yat Sen University (Guangzhou, China).
He has been the lecturer/coordinator for several courses in the BSc and MSc study programmes of Medicine, Molecular Life Sciences, Biomedical Sciences and Medical Biology. He has also been a member of the curriculum revision core team of Radboud university medical center and the education management team of the department of Human Genetics.
He has also acted as board member of the Academic Oncology Center Nijmegen, as chairman of the Scientific Research Board of the Radboud Oncology Fund, and as a member of the Radboud university medical center Oncology Report editorial board. In addition, he was senior editor of the International Human Genome Project, associate editor of several international scientific journals and actively involved in various local, national and international societies and committees.
He is editor in chief of the scientific journal Cellular Oncology.
