Janneke Ham Improving personalised care in head and neck cancer patients

This thesis describes the results of studies in patients with head and neck cancer, with the aim of reducing side effects and maintaining quality of life and improving the effectiveness of treatments. The PANTAP study showed that giving prophylactic antibiotics during chemoradiotherapy due to locally advanced head and neck cancer, reduces the number of hospital admissions and the number of episodes with fever, and gives a better quality of life with less symptoms during treatment. The PRONE study has shown that predicting hearing loss and kidney injury during treatment with chemoradiotherapy by means of genetic variations, is not yet possible in patients with locally advanced head and neck cancer. Finally, the COMMENCE study has shown that adding the medicine cetuximab to the medicine methotrexate leads to better progression-free survival compared to methotrexate alone in patients with metastatic head and neck cancer, without causing additional side effects. However, more research remains necessary to improve care for patients with head and neck cancer.
