Marja Bulte-ter Meer Vascular regeneration using cells, biomaterials and prodrugs

Regeneration of blood vessels is a rather slow process in humans. In an attempt to speed this process up, several experimental methods were pursued in this thesis. The first approach entails the use of cultured cells that were used to replace damaged cells on the inner lining of the vessels, to improve recovery. These cells were delivered using uniquely designed metal implants with a groove engineered into the surface. The second approach made use of tubular implants solely consisting of collagen, with the unique property of shape memory. This property allows for the use of minimally invasive implantation methods. This approach has previously been described for other materials e.g. metals and polymers, but not for biological materials such as collagen. Finally, a novel method using prodrugs, inactivated drugs and metal implants to activate these prodrugs was studied. This could be a very interesting alternative as a localized targeted drug delivery system.
