Hype or (R)evolutionHip replacement using an artificial socket-ball implant (total hip arthroplasty; THA) is a highly satisfying treatment for patients with severe osteoarthritis of the hip. Age limits for THA have been lowered and an increasing number of relatively young patients are treated with THA. Despite the overall excellent results of THA, patients are still confronted with dislocations of the hip joint, gait impairment and bone loss surrounding the implant resulting in loosening of the implant. Young patients are very likely to outlive their hip implant, and implants need more often to be revised. Recent innovations on component design have not yet led to substantial improvement of functional outcome after surgery, to fewer complications or to extended implant lifespan. This thesis focusses on the protentional benefits and risks of recently introduced orthopedic innovations based on patient-specific outcome parameters. A hyped introduction should be avoided in favor of a regulated stepwise introduction based on reported treatment results, as a hyped introduction may jeopardize patient-safety.

Davey Gerhardt (1988) studied Medicine at the Radboudumc and obtained his medical degree in 2013. The research in this thesis was performed at the department of Orthopaedic surgery of Rijnstate Hospital. In 2015 he entered the residency program in orthopaedics at the department of Orthopaedic Surgery of Radboudumc, Sint Maartenskliniek and Rijnstate Hospital. As expected he will complete his residency in 2022.
