Jeanine Driesenaar Communication at the community pharmacy

Patients with asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) do not always take their medication in the frequency and dosage as prescribed by their healthcare provider. This can result in, for instance, uncontrolled disease and high healthcare costs. Several factors might be associated with this suboptimal adherence,  like patients’ beliefs about their medication and the communication between healthcare providers and patients. When communicating in an effective, open and patient-centered way, healthcare providers have the opportunity to change patients’ medication-taking behavior and related beliefs. Community pharmacists are one of the designated healthcare providers to educate and counsel patients. However, we do not know whether they have sufficient communication skills for this part of their work. The aim of this thesis is to get insight into the state of the art and related points of improvement regarding the communication of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians with patients with asthma or COPD. One of the main findings is that the communication needs to become more patient-centered, in which the patients‘ needs and perspective is taken into account.
