Marlieke den Herder-van der Eerden Integrated palliative care: A European investigation of the perspectives of patients, family caregivers and healthcare professionals

In this thesis we examined the experiences of healthcare professionals, patients and family caregivers with care provision and the way integrated palliative care takes shape in practice within several collaboration initiatives for palliative care in Belgium, Germany, Hungary, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. The study shows that, at a small scale and where healthcare professionals know each other well, the initiatives provide good palliative care, but that collaboration and information transfer with healthcare professionals who are not involved in these initiatives needs improvement. Developing and disseminating a shared vision on (the surplus value of) palliative care is essential. Also, the awareness, knowledge and expertise of healthcare professionals with other backgrounds than palliative care needs to be enhanced and strategies to implement integrated palliative care more systematically need to be promoted. Developing referral pathways for palliative care and systems to facilitate information exchange could be helpful as well. Regulation and finance need to focus on integrated palliative care programmes for both oncologic and non-oncologic patient with palliative care needs.
