Xinjie Cai Cell therapy for the lost tissue surrounding the teethPeriodontitis is a severe inflammatory disease that occurs in many adults. When the tissue around the teeth is inflamed for a longer period, the result can even be the loss of the teeth. Many attempts have been made to treat periodontitis, but all current clinical approaches are yielding unstable results in the long term. In this thesis, Dr Cai investigated several new therapies. First, a fibrous material was made and seeded with cells. These cells could recover the periodontal tissue. It was also attempted to attract cells of the host itself, to achieve tissue recovery. These cell therapy strategies were all successful in rats, and now are considered for further development towards clinical use.
