About the course
A unique course in which diagnostics and clinically useful tips are central!
Severe tooth wear is seen as an increasing problem in dentistry. Among adolescents, in one-third of the population dental wear is observed, which assumes that nutrition plays an important role. However, the number of patients with tooth wear that needs restorative treatment is limited and the etiology of wear seems to be complex and multifactorial. Besides the chemical wear, also a mechanical wear (e.g. attrition (bruxism) and abrasion) play an important part. Restorative treatment is complex and the question is when it is wise to start such treatment, partly because in patients with severe wear the prognosis of the restorations is uncertain. Both indirect, semi-direct and direct techniques are eligible, although long-term results are still scarce.
About the course
This course is divided into a theoretical and practical part. In the theoretical part, diagnosis, appearance and etiology of teeth wear are the choice between different treatment options will be thoroughly discussed. In the practical part, you will actively start to place an increase of vertical dimension of occlusion with direct composite restorations using the Direct Shaping in Occlusion (DSO).
Course content
- Diagnostic tools to diagnose (severe) tooth wear. Take note of the appearance of the wear!
- Finding the underlying etiology: is it really the use of soda?
- When is a restorative treatment indicated or could ‘counseling and monitoring’ be an option?
- Presentation of different restorative approaches
- Advantages and disadvantages of different treatment options
