About Center of Expertise Rare Kidney Diseases

Radboudumc's center of expertise in Rare Kidney Diseases offers specialist medical care to adults and children with rare kidney diseases and conducts scientific research into these diseases.
 
The centre of expertise specializes in the following groups of kidney diseases:
  • Glomerular kidney diseases
  • Tubular kidney diseases
  • Cystic kidney diseases (including ciliopathies and nephronophtisis)
  • Congenital abnormalities of kidneys and urinary tract
  • Cystinosis
  • HUS/C3
Our center of expertise offers specialized multidisciplinary care and knowledge under one roof. We conduct leading international research into the emerging causes of rare kidney diseases and into the prevention, follow-up and treatment of these diseases. We are also committed to transferring knowledge to both patients and their families and referrers and doctors in training in the region. Radboudumc's Center of Expertise Rare Kidney Diseases is acknowledged as a center of expertise by the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport. Education regarding kidney disease

Our center of expertise in Rare Kidney Diseases educates students in study programs of Medicine and of Biomedical Sciences. In addition, medical specialists (in training) can do an internship at our center of expertise. We also offer students the opportunity to carry out scientific research within our center of expertise.

Continuing professional training

In addition, our center of expertise contributes to the further training and education of medical specialists, general practitioners and nurses through Q and A evenings and refresher training symposia.

Participating in research

In order to further improve care for patients, Radboudumc’s center of expertise in Rare Kidney Diseases conducts scientific research. Among other things, we conduct research into the cause of disorders, improvement of care and cure. You may be asked to participate in research or to donate body material (urine, blood, DNA) for scientific research. 

Radboud Biobank

Body material for research is stored in the Radboud Biobank.

AGORA

AGORA is part of the Radboud Biobank, and focuses specifically on congenital diseases. The research investigates the causes of various hereditary diseases in children.

KOUNCIL

The aim of KOUNCIL is to investigate the hereditary cause and the mechanisms of disease of the renal disease 'nephronoftise'. More information on Renal Disorders Research can be found on this page.
