Social workIllness and everything it involves can disrupt your daily life considerably. Our social workers can help you to maintain control over your life – to reinforce or regain it. Together with you, they look for answers to questions and for solutions to problems. The social workers cooperate with our doctors, nurses and other healthcare providers. Just like other medical professionals, they have a duty of confidentiality. This means that they are not permitted to share your details with anyone. So you can feel free to confidently discuss everything with them.
Potential problemsDue to illness, potential investigations and treatments and/or your hospitalization, you may have to cope with, for example:
- emotional difficulties when dealing with and accepting your disease
- problems with your partner, children and/or other family members
- problems related to (negative) reactions of others, at work or in daily life
- problems with home care (thuiszorg) during hospitalization and recovery period
- financial or material problems, arising from hospitalization or treatment
- housing problems related to your illness (consultations on adapted housing)
- doubts about the type of medical treatment you are receiving
- complaints or conflicts regarding the treatment
- questions about hospitalization, illness and treatment of children
Informal caregiving (mantelzorg)A social worker provides assistance with practical problems due to illness or hospitalization of a dear one. For example, informal care provides help in organizing childcare, assistance in solving financial and housing problems, and support when applying for benefits and facilities such as PGB (personal budget) and RIBW (regional institution for sheltered housing). But also other issues can be addressed, such as your experiences and thoughts. For example relational problems, quality of life after treatment, etc.
ContactWould you like to contact the social caregiver of the department? Please ask your doctor or nurse.

Spiritual care and pastoral care
Spiritual counsellorsYour illness and everything related to it can evoke thoughts and feelings that affect your life, religion or belief. Sometimes you have to make difficult decisions regarding your treatment. If you would like to talk about that with someone, our spiritual counsellors are there for you. The spiritual counsellors of the Spiritual and Pastoral Care service are all appointed as priests too, by different churches. They are able to bring you into contact with your priest, preacher, or another spiritual caregiver, such as your humanist counsellor, rabbi or imam. Also, you can call on them for receiving communion, anointing of the sick, baptism or another ritual.
Ecumenical celebrationsEvery Sunday, an ecumenical celebration of word and table is held for all patients, visitors and staff. When you are hospitalized, a nurse comes by to ask if you want to attend this celebration. Volunteers can guide you to the service. It is also possible to receive communion or the Lord’s Supper at your room. The service text is issued at the medical departments prior to the service.
- every Sunday at 10.00 hrs
- Garden hall, route 706
ContactDo you want to contact the spiritual counsellor? Please ask the nurse or department secretary to make an appointment for you, or call the Spiritual and Pastoral Care service secretariat at +31 (0)24 361 33 20.
Patient associationsIn the Netherlands, there are many associations who advocate patients interests. General patient associations, but also associations of patients who suffer one specific disease or who share one particular disability. These associations provide information and education, and often they can help you to get in touch with others in a similar situation. Please ask your doctor, nurse or social worker for more information. You can also find information on the Zorgbelang Gelderland website (Dutch).
