PRECIES studyFeasibility of preoperative staging with USPIO MRI in patients with resectable esophageal carcinoma (PRECIES study).
AimsStaging of esophageal carcinoma after neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (nCRT) is currently inadequate because of the low accuracy of current imaging techniques. With accurate staging of lymph node metastases after nCRT, it is possible to personalize the treatment strategy. For example, preclude unnecessary lymph node dissections by patients without lymph node metastases (70% of the patients).
MRI with ultrasmall superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (USPIO, ferumoxtran-10) has been reintroduced to detect metastatic lymph nodes in prostate cancer. The aim of this proof of concept study is to assess the feasibility of USPIO-MRI to detect loco-regional lymph node metastases in patients with esophageal cancer.
