Carlijn Maasakkers works at the department of Geriatrics as a PhD student. She earned her master’s degree in Nutrition & Health Science from Wageningen University in 2017. During her masters she specialized in molecular nutrition and studied oxidative stress and immune markers in children with ADHD. She is currently working on a collaborative research project with the Integrative Physiology Department, supervised by Prof. Marcel Olde Rikkert and Prof. Dick Thijssen. Her PhD project focuses on the effect of sedentary behaviour on cognition and is titled: the MindSed study. The study combines both epidemiological analyses on longitudinal ageing cohorts, with physiological measures in a clinical experiment. In the summer of 2019, Carlijn secured a visiting research position at Trinity College Dublin (Ireland) in order to collaborate with researchers from the TILDA study. She plans to defend her thesis in 2021.
