Dennis Janssen is head of experimental research of the Orthopaedic Research Lab. His research team focuses on the technological development, improvement, and implementation of orthopedic care. For this purpose, computational modeling (e.g. finite element analysis, musculoskeletal modeling) is combined with physical experimental testing. The goal of these biomechanical and functional analyses is to provide a better, functional pre-operative planning, resulting in a better treatment for the patient. To accomplish the pre-operative plan at the theatre, we investigate patient-specific solutions such as custom 3D-printed cutting guides, surgical navigation, and robotics. Specific topics of interest include total joint reconstruction, reconstructions bone deformities and large bone defects, ligament reconstructions, and meniscus replacement.
Ideally, every procedure in clinical practice and public health should take place based on proof, instead of intuition or 'experience'. Our aim is to innovate and personalize healthcare and public health.
