I am working as a senior scientist at the Laboratory of Paediatric Infectious Diseases with as main focus severe respiratory infections in children. My research aims to identify the immunological 'drivers' of severe RSV infections. For this transcriptome analysis of leukocytes of paediatric patients have been performed to identify new pathophysiological mechanisms. Based on these findings two research themes have been defined:
The effect of bacteria present in the nasopharynx during viral infection on the inflammatory response.
The role of maternal antibodies present during a primary respiratory syncytial viral infection and the effect on the innate immune response.
Our main aim is to achieve a greater understanding of the molecular mechanisms of disease. By integrating fundamental and clinical research, we obtain multifaceted knowledge of (patho)physiological processes.
