Aims of this research group

This research group aims to:
  • Improve outcomes after surgery and to reduce healthcare costs.
  • Enhance recovery after surgery by developing new multidisciplinary approaches to reduce tissue injury and to optimize pain management after surgery.
  • Optimize pre-operative risk-stratification by developing new diagnostic tests to predict cardiovascular events, clinical progression and wound healing in patients with (critical) lower limb ischemia (peripheral arterial disease).
  • Develop a robot-controlled steerable catheter for vascular interventions, to avoid the use of radiation and nephrotoxic contrast agents during endovascular procedures.

Discoveries of this research group

In collaboration with the group of Dick Thijssen (Physiology), we recently developed the carotid artery reactivity test (CAR). Using ultrasound imaging of the carotid artery during a sympathic stimulus (ice water immersion of the hand), endothelial dysfunction can be measured. In a prospective cohort the CAR was a strong predictor of cardiovascular events and clinical progression in patients with peripheral arterial disease.
