Rik Hansen postdoc

In November 2017 Rik (H.H.G.) Hansen obtained a permanent position as workgroupleader of the functional ultrasound imaging workgroup of the Medical UltraSound Imaging Center (MUSIC) at the department of Radiology and Nuclear Medicine. Since obtaining his PhD on noninvasive vascular ultrasound strain elastography for vulnerable plaque detection in carotid arteries in 2012, his research has mainly focused on developing ultrafast functional ultrasound techniques, such as 3D strain elastography, 3D blood flow imaging and shear wave elastography for vascular applications and breast cancer detection. Rik has published over 35 papers and is currently supervising 6 PhD students on these topics. In 2013, Rik stayed at the Center for Fast Ultrasound Imaging in Copenhagen, to initiate a collaboration on ultrafast ultrasound imaging techniques. In 2014 he worked at Institut Langevin in Paris, to initiate a collaboration on vascular shear wave elastography. This stay also further inspired Rik to start in setting up a new shear wave elastography related research line within MUSIC.

  • 2017: Hamburger Award for best Thesis 2017 was awarded to Dr. Martijn F.H. Maessen by the Dutch Physiology Association (first PhD student co-promoted by Rik Hansen).
  • 2017: Best published paper award for paper entitled ‘Validation of noninvasive in Vivo Compound Ultrasound Strain Imaging using histologic Plaque Vulnerability Features’ which appeared in Stroke. The award was granted by the EFSUMB (European Federation of Societies for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology) at the EUROSON 2017 conference in Ljubljana, Slovenia.
  • 2017: RIHS science award 2016 for the paper ‘Validation of noninvasive in Vivo Compound Ultrasound Strain Imaging using histologic Plaque Vulnerability Features’ which appeared in Stroke. It was an award for the best scientific paper of 2016 from the RIHS. 2017 2nd best oral presentation award at the Sixth Dutch Conference on Biomedical Engineering 2017, Egmond aan Zee, the Netherlands won by Anne E.C.M. Saris, a PhD student supervised as copromotor by H.H.G. Hansen.
  • 2014: Member of the Radboudumc-team that won “the Battle of the Universities 2014” at the Van Noordwijk Stipendium, hosted by Willem Kolff Stichting and Philips Research.
  • 2012: 2nd place in the “Young Investigator Award”-session of the EUROSON 2012 conference organized by the EFSUMB (European Federation of Societies for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology), Madrid, Spain.
  • 2011: Award for 2nd Best Oral Presentation at the Third Dutch Conference on Biomedical Engineering 2011, Egmond aan Zee, the Netherlands.
