Aims

Our group aims to improve person-centered care, which often implicates that patients want to receive healthcare close to their homes (in general practice) when possible, and in the hospital when needed. This means that healthcare workers in these settings need to collaborate. From the perspective of primary and community care we study ways to improve this collaboration like telemedicine, connecting professional health records with the personal healthrecord of the patient and other ways of communication. We also aim to clarify the role of the general practitioner as generalist, with increasing multimorbidity, ageing and complexity of care. We also aim to further define the position of primary care professionals working regarding community-based care, prevention and connection to the welfare domain. Regarding patient-centeredness we study ways to improve generic care focussed on the needs of the patient in addition to the traditional disease-oriented care. We aim to use state-of-the-art research methods, either qualitative or quantitative.

About this research group

The research group aims to improve healthcare, from a primary care and transmural perspective. Common disorders are studied with optimal research methods.

Regarding disease categories, we have special interest in and primary care knowledge of mental disorders, kidney disease, cardiometabolic diseases and lung disorders. We aim to connect these disease-specific themes with generic themes like person-centered care, community care (including prevention), healthcare innovation, multimorbidity and contextual healthcare.

New research methods are introduced into the extramural domain. In addition, research on interprofessional education (enabling transmural collaboration) is an emerging theme (Nynke Scherpbier). Projects are often conducted in collaboration with hospital specialists from different backgrounds.

The research group has large experience with handling routine data from electronic heath records in general practice. We have a large primary care registration network with a very detailed registration for over more than a decade.
