Job description

What if we could use urine to detect diseases early and use lifestyle changes to prevent them?
With this position, we are looking for a PhD candidate that can help us find urinary biomarkers to achieve this. This project is part of the ‘Smart Bathroom for Health’, that has the goal to non-invasively and regularly measure its user’s health status and provide personalized feedback. For example, by measuring urinary biomarkers in a smart toilet.

The overall aim of this project is to explore urinary biomarkers for kidney failure and/or (low-grade) inflammation that can be measured in a smart toilet. Next to this, technology will be developed along with imec to detect these biomarkers. You will start with known biomarkers that are applicable to the use cases and are aligned with sensor technology development within OnePlanet, while exploring new (unknown) biomarkers that can be fed into the development pipeline in a later stage. To achieve these goals, a number of clinical datasets are available. You will use these datasets to explore urinary biomarkers, which requires a strong interest and experience in analysis of large datasets. In addition, you will set up and perform studies (both in the lab and in the field) to explore and validate biomarkers.

As PhD candidate you will:

  • Perform research in the multidisciplinary collaboration OnePlanet Research Center.
  • Explore urinary biomarkers by analyzing large datasets.
  • Setting up and performing studies in the lab and in the field to explore and validate urinary biomarkers.
  • Test and validate technologies that are developed to measure urinary biomarkers.
  • Publish findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at international scientific conferences. These published papers will become part of the PhD thesis.
  • Be offered a four-year contract to finalize PhD training and project.
  • Work in an interdisciplinary team of international scientists, at the institutes of all partners, depending on the phase of the project.
