Job description

We are looking for a Biomedical scientist (biomedical sciences), (medical) biologist, health scientist, molecular life scientist, medical doctor/'arts-onderzoeker' with a strong interest in neuro-inflammation. The project aims at addressing the role of various aspects of inflammation in the progression of cerebral small vessel disease. Will you join our team? 

This position involves recruiting a cohort of 100 patients with cerebral small vessel disease and analysis of advanced MRI data (DTI, blood brain barrier imaging) and of immunological assays. Immune cell analyses will be performed by a laboratory technician. The project is part of an exciting collaborative project, funded by the Dutch and British Heart Foundations, with a neurologist and immunologist of the university of Cambridge (UK).

Tasks and responsibilities

  • Selecting and recruiting/inviting of about 100 patients with cerebral small vessel disease.
  • Withdrawal of blood.
  • Examination of study participants (medical history, physical and neuropsychological examination).
  • Planning of MRI scans.
  • Responsible for planning and logistics of the study.
  • Performing MRI pre- and postprocessing.
  • Statistical analysis of immunological data and MRI/clinical outcomes.
  • Aligning procedures and analyses with colleagues in Cambridge.
  • Participating in regular consortium meetings in Cambridge and Nijmegen.
  • Preparing manuscripts, resulting in a PhD thesis.

The Department of Neurology is a national reference center for movement disorders and neuromuscular and cerebrovascular diseases. Our research is embedded within these clinical topics and is positioned in the disorders of movement research theme, Donders center of medical neuroscience. At the department there is strong cross-fertilization between patient care and research. Patients are involved from the very beginning of our research and our research objectives are inspired by questions from our patients. About 20 PhD candidates work within the cerebrovascular research group with many of them combining clinical training with a PhD.

This project is a joint project with the Department of Internal Medicine. The laboratory of Experimental Internal Medicine is world renowned for its translational research on inflammation/innate immunity and harbors approximately 50 PhD candidates, 10 postdocs and 10 technicians.

We are looking for an ambitious biomedical scientist, biologist; health scientist, molecular life scientist or medical doctor/“arts-onderzoeker” with a proven interest at the crossing of clinical neurosciences, neuroimaging and immunology. We request a combination of clinical and analytical skills of a candidate who likes to excel in a multidisciplinary and international scientific environment.
Our proposal involves the invitation, communication and investigation of elderly participants who often only speak Dutch. Understanding and speaking Dutch is therefore prerequisite for this research position.
