Job description

We are looking for PhD candidates to develop deep-learning algorithms that analyse images and additional data with the aim that these algorithms will support clinicians in diagnosis and treatment process. The applications can range from radiology, oncology, cardiology, radiotherapy or neurology. Will you join our team? 

The Diagnostic Image Analysis Group develops computer algorithms to aid clinicians in the interpretation of medical images and further clinical data and thereby improving the diagnostic and treatment process.
We live in a data-driven era where more and more data are being collected. This trend does not stop at the hospital. During the diagnosis and treatment of a patient, a variety of multimodal data is acquired and supplemented by reports, clinical notes, and data from patient visits.

Consequently, combining and evaluating all this data is becoming an increasingly difficult task that can hardly be done manually. With yearly increases in, e.g., the number of imaging studies conducted, the workload for healthcare professionals increases. Therefore, there is an urgent need for systems that support clinicians during the diagnosis and treatment process. The research should result in a PhD thesis.

Department

You will work in the Diagnostic Image Analysis Group (DIAG). DIAG is part of the Departments of Imaging, Pathology, Ophthalmology, and Radiation Oncology of Radboud University Medical Center. We develop computer algorithms to interpret and process medical images. The group currently consists of around 70 researchers. Radboud University Medical Center and Radboud University are located in Nijmegen, the oldest Dutch city with a rich history and one of the liveliest city centers in the Netherlands.

At the moment there are more than 1,300 PhD candidates at our medical hospital. This number includes PhD candidates on our pay roll as well as external candidates (those employed somewhere else but researching on our premises).

You are a creative and enthusiastic researcher with an MSc degree in Computer Science, Physics, Engineering or Biomedical Sciences or similar. Futhermore you have: 

  • A clear interest to develop image analysis algorithms and an affinity with medical topics.
  • Experience with deep learning, machine learning, and image analysis is a plus.
  • Expertise in software development, preferably in Python, are essential.
  • Good communication and enjoy working in a multidisciplinary team.

Terms of employment

Working at Radboud university medical center means that you are ahead of the curve and working together on the healthcare of the future. And there is more. Our secondary terms of employment are impressive. These are fully tailored to you thanks to our Employment Conditions Selection Model. At Radboud university medical center, you will be given trust, and you will take the responsibility to handle everything together. We provide annual courses, both professional and personal.

  • A gross monthly salary between € 2.631 and € 3.336 (scale 10A) based on full-time employment. 
  • An annual vacation allowance of 8% and an end-of-year bonus of 8.3%.
  • If you work irregular hours, you will receive an allowance.
  • As a full-time employee (36 hours per week), you are entitled to approximately 168 vacation hours (over 23 days) per year.
  • Radboud university medical center pays 70% of the pension premium. You pay the rest of the premium with your gross salary.
  • You get a discount on health insurance as well: you can take advantage of two group health insurance plans. UMC Zorgverzekering and CZ collectief.

Will you make a difference for our patients? We would like to receive your application before 9 January 2023. We will process the applications immediately upon receival. You should supply a motivation letter, your CV, links to a Google Scholar profile, a list of grades and courses you have followed including online courses on deep learning and similar topics, and links to any publications you have written plus any code you have written and is publicly accessible, e.g., on a GitHub account.

When you begin employment, we will request a certificate of conduct (VOG) and, depending on the position, you may be screened. You do not need to do anything for this; we will inform you later.
