Job description

As a software developer / data analyst, you work under supervision of senior bioinformaticians and will deliver bioinformatics support to research projects for clients and internal research projects. You will focus on the analysis of RNA-seq data and develop, test and apply various analysis pipelines for gene/exon expression quantification, alternative transcript detection and detection of (the effect of) genetic variants. You are expected to deliver the pipelines and discuss the results with (bio)medical researchers. You will assist in the interpretation of the data and the assessment of pathogenicity in clinical diagnostic applications.

Tasks and responsibilities
  • Development of a modular and easy-to-maintain RNA-seq analysis pipeline;
  • Running and maintenance of bioinformatics pipelines in a transparent and reproducible manner;
  • Preprocessing, quality control, downstream processing, visualization and interpretation of RNA-seq and other –omics data;
  • Documentation and versioning of code and maintenance of systems;
  • Professionalization of RTC services through the digital research environment.


You have a bachelor’s degree or higher in Bioinformatics or Computer Science with knowledge of statistics and molecular biology. You have ample experience with Linux, bash scripting and programming languages like Java, R and Python. Experience in workflow development, cluster programming, software engineering and server administration is a plus. You work in a structured way, using version control systems (like Git). You are flexible and communicative, are able to explain bioinformatics workflows to biomedical scientists and enjoy working on multiple, parallel projects in a team setting.


The Radboud Technology Center Bioinformatics is one of the 19 technology centers in the Radboud University Medical Center Nijmegen. This cross-departmental group provides bioinformatics expertise, services and tools to (bio)medical scientists within and outside Radboudumc. Its portfolio consists of short-term and long-term projects. In the latter case, you may be seconded to different departments within the Radboudumc.

The two largest departments contributing to the RTC Bioinformatics are the Center for Molecular and Biomolecular Informatics and the department of Human Genetics. The candidate will be embedded in these two departments. The two departments are engaged in top level research into the molecular etiology of diseases, and develop state-of-the-art bioinformatics algorithms, tools and services for the prediction of the effect of genetic variants on protein function and patient phenotypes.
