Job description

Spinal cord injury is a devastating pathology with dramatic lifetime consequences affecting thousands of people worldwide, whereas the central nervous system has only a very limited ability of regeneration. A recently approved consortium grant from the European Union allows us to appoint a junior researcher (PhD candidate) studying graphene-related biomaterials. Such materials can be made to present electrical, chemical, mechanical and topographic features able to preserve neural cell survival and enhance neural progenitor cell differentiation, and can be applied for new therapeutic approaches for spinal cord recovery. The junior researcher will be responsible for the biological evaluation of such materials.

Tasks and responsibilities
  • Perform independent laboratory research in cell culture and preclinical models;
  • Disseminate research activities through publications, consortium meetings, and conference presentations;
  • Instruct and support undergraduate (Bsc, MSc) students for short internships;
  • Research should accumulate in a PhD thesis defense after the 4 year period.

Profile

A recently finalized MSc diploma in medical biology, biomedical sciences, bioengineering, or related field. Candidate must demonstrate the willingness ability to perform research within a larger European consortium, and have appropriate presentation and writing skills, as demonstrated through relevant research internship experience. Candidate should preferentially have experience with one or more of the following techniques: cell culture, electron microscopy, molecular biological assays (cell differentiation assays, PCR), preclinical models (Art 9 WOD), histology, and/or histochemistry.

Organization

The Biomaterials Research Group at the Radboudumc, Nijmegen, the Netherlands is a highly multidisciplinary and professional environment, which performs research in collaboration with a wide range of national and international academic partners. The group has access to a fully equipped 650m² laboratory supported by 7 research technicians. Currently the Biomaterials group consists of 2 full professors, 4 tenured faculty staff, 2 postdoctoral researchers, and 17 PhD candidates.
