Job description

We offer an exciting and varied position in which you, as a research statistician or post-doctoral researcher with strong analytical and statistical skills, participate in the scientific design, analysis and implementation of clinical and epidemiological research on malaria. In the multi-disciplinary team of malaria researchers at Radboudumc, we conduct state of the art translational, clinical and epidemiological studies in controlled human infection models and populations naturally exposed to malaria in endemic settings. With the advertised post, we aim to strengthen our team with an enthusiastic researcher with strong analytical skills who is eager to support ongoing clinical (field) studies and develop her/his own research portfolio to push the boundaries of the field.

You will work together with biomedical researchers in the design and analysis of clinical trials, cluster-randomized trials and observational studies performed in the Netherlands and malaria endemic countries. You will be embedded in two departments: research activities will be embedded in the malaria research conducted at the department of Medical Microbiology in strong collaboration with the biostatistics research group at the department of Health Evidence. The research portfolio is very varied, and includes the evaluation of new vaccination strategies in clinical trials, all forms of epidemiological research and more fundamental research into the causes and mechanisms of disease. The statistician is expected to make an innovative contribution in design and analysis with a good understanding of the clinical background of the study and the biology of the malaria parasite. Inspired by these applications, you further develop the statistical methodology where necessary, which leads to your own research that is directly relevant to patient-related research. You participate in education for (bio) medical students at all levels.

Statistician or researcher with strong statistical and analytical skills with a broad interest and entrepreneurial spirit, preferably with a PhD and with a strong background in mathematics. Experience in consultation and multidisciplinary projects is an advantage. Excellent communication skills, skilled in relevant software applications
  • A Ph.D. degree in mathematics, statistics or related field or a minimum of 3 years of work experience in these fields.
  • Strong background in mathematics.
  • An independent and well-structured working style.
  • A scientific interest in infectious diseases and clinical trials.
  • Well-developed social skills directed to work in an international team.
  • Strong motivation and ambition to succeed in scientific research.
  • Experience with clinical studies is an advantage.

Departments of Medical Microbiology and the Centre for Molecular and Biomolecular Informatics
The Department of Medical Microbiology hosts a world-leading malaria research group chaired by Prof. Dr. Teun Bousema. The group pioneered the use of controlled infection models for malaria and is a leading research team in the epidemiology of P. falciparum malaria.
The group of Prof. Dr. Kit Roes has a strong track record in statistical methodology for clinical research. Methodological research focuses on innovative designs and analysis of clinical research for rare disorders and (dynamic) prediction, a focus that fits well with individual patient-oriented treatment and clinical research with small population sizes.
