Job descriptionWithin the Molecular Physiology group of the department of Physiology, we are seeking a Postdoc for a combined molecular and physiological project entitled "Molecular regulation of ion channels in relation to kidney health and disease". We offer a challenging postdoc project in a well-organized, international, and high-profile department within the Radboud Institute for Molecular Life Sciences.
Our group investigates the regulation of sodium, calcium and magnesium transport in kidney epithelial tissue. We study the molecular functioning of ion channels, mainly TRP channels, and transporters using a combination of functional and biochemical analyses. Knowledge of these proteins will, in particular, provide a fundamental basis for achieving a better understanding of the molecular machinery controlling electrolyte homeostasis. In this respect, we are seeking a postdoc with electrophysiology skills and preferentially also advanced microscopy expertise.
One of main projects involves the study of functional consequences of calmodulin interaction with TRPV5 and TRPV6. These channels form a distinctive category within the TRP family based on their high selectivity for calcium ions together with a calcium-dependent inactivation mechanism that is regulated by calmodulin. Despite the long-established role of calmodulin influencing voltage-gated ion channels (known as ‘calmodulation’), there is no consensus on such TRP channel regulation. Our group recently elucidated the 3D structure of TRPV5 in complex with calmodulin, offering intriguing and unique insights to unravel CaM regulation at single molecule level.
In addition, we have several ongoing projects in relation to electrophysiological analysis of patient mutations in TRP channels in the presence or absence of various regulatory interaction partners. These experiments will be instrumental to address the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying the mutations found in patients.
Tasks and responsibilities
- Design and perform scientific research in the area of electrophysiology and fluorescence microscopy of ion channels in relation to kidney health and disease.
- Generate and analyse data, writing scientific publications, and present findings at scientific meetings.
- Working in a team with other scientists to discuss, plan and perform research in a stimulating environment.
- PhD degree, in the direction of Biochemistry / Biophysics.
- Solid knowledge of electrophysiology and cell biology.
- Experience with fluorescence microscopy is considered a pre.
- Affinity with team-oriented work within an enthusiastic and motivated group of researchers from various countries.
- A flexible working attitude and independent working style.
OrganizationThe department of Physiology has a long-standing tradition in transport physiology in epithelia and has built up a substantial know-how and infrastructure in the field of molecular and cellular physiology of electrolyte transport. The Molecular Physiology group consists of an enthusiastic research team of about 25 people and is, together with basic science and research-oriented clinical departments of the Radboud university medical center, housed in the Radboud Institute for Molecular Life Sciences. This integrates diverse scientific expertise in molecular and medical science for the advancement of innovation in translational research.
