Job description

Current microscopy tools provide a limited view of biological systems and tend to focus on a specific biological scale (such as proteins, cells, or tissues) in an often artificial context, like isolated proteins or extracted cells. To advance the field of imaging, we need to push the boundaries of which biological processes we can visualize and measure. This means imaging across biological scales and in the necessary context, such as viewing protein interactions inside a cell or cell signaling in the living system — tasks that are mostly beyond current capabilities.

Radboud Technology Center (RTC) Microscopy provides advanced imaging tools, and support for their use to the scientific community of Radboud University. We also work on the development of new imaging techniques, to realize the imaging of the future. The RTC Microscopy is home to researchers from Radboud Institute for Molecular Life Sciences of the Radboud University Medical Center.

We are looking for an enthusiastic Technical Support co-worker with a bachelor (hbo) degree in laboratory research (hlo). The project will be carried out at the Electron Microscopy Center of Radboudumc, within the RTC | Radboud Institute for Molecular Life Sciences (RIMLS) of the Radboud University Medical Center, Nijmegen - The Netherlands. The co-worker will be appointed in the department of Biochemistry in the group of Prof. Nico Sommerdijk.

He/she will develop and apply advanced electron microscopic techniques for the structural and chemical analysis of biological materials (hard and soft tissues). The work will be performed to support the activities of the Radboud Technology Center Microscopy, both in service and by being associated to specific scientific EM-oriented projects. (~50:50)

The co-worker will specialize in 3D cryogenic FIB/SEM  for volume imaging of biological materials, where he/she will train, assist and support researchers in performing and analyzing their experiments. In addition he/she will perform research within specific projects to push the borders of advanced EM techniques and to apply them to answer open scientific questions. The main focus of the project will be on hard tissue formation (e.g. the mechanisms of bone formation). Furthermore the co-worker will contribute to the running of the Electron Microscopy Center and to the maintenance of the infrastructure.
