Job description

As a PhD candidate, you will be involved in a KWF-funded project to explore Siglecs as key Glyco-immune checkpoints in murine tumor models and cancer patients.
Upon malignant transformation, tumor cells upregulate the synthesis of sialic acid sugar-carrying glycans (sialoglycans). These sialic acids not only promote tumor cell growth but also protect them from recognition and eradication by immune cells. Sialic Acid are recognized by Glyco-immune check point receptors called Siglecs. We have generated unique Siglec blocking mAbs for human and murine studies.

At the Radiotherapy and OncoImmunology lab (ROl), ~ 25 researchers aim at better understanding tumor cell interactions with the immune system using imaging, molecular-, cell biological- and immunological- techniques in relation to cancer therapies, especially radiotherapy. Research is centred around the development of new situ cancer vaccines combining local tumor ablation and dendritic cell (DC) activation through immune adjuvants. In addition, the interplay between immune- and tumor cells is studied within the tumor microenvironment (TME), including the role of the Siglec/Sialic Acid axis as Glyco-immune checkpoints. An important activity of the department is the translation of basic research into clinical application.

We are looking for an enthusiastic PhD candidate with a degree (MSc) in biomedical sciences at the interface of cell biology and immunology or equivalent. He/she is intrinsically motivated for scientific research and discovery.

In this project, a combination of immunological (Flow, functional assays), molecular (RNA seq, qPCR) and cell biological techniques (Microscopy) and read-outs are applied in pre-clinical mouse samples as well as human samples. In addition, animal experiments will be performed for immunotherapy efficacy studies. Therefore, candidates with a background in Cancer-immunology/biology holding an article 9 certificate for working with experimental animals are especially invited to apply.

At Radboud university medical center, you will be given trust, and you will take the responsibility to handle everything together. We provide annual courses, both professional and personal.

  • In addition to your monthly salary and an annual vacation allowance of 8%, you will receive an end-of-year bonus of 8.3%.
  • If you work irregular hours, you will receive an allowance.
  • As a full-time employee (36 hours per week), you are entitled to approximately 168 vacation hours (over 23 days) per year.
  • Radboud university medical center pays 70% of the pension premium. You pay the rest of the premium with your gross salary.
  • You get a discount on health insurance as well: you can take advantage of two group health insurance plans. UMC Zorgverzekering and CZ collectief.
