As a PhD candidate ‘Improving recognition of patients with PHTS’, you will work on easy-to-apply sets of clinical criteria that can be assessed by each healthcare provider who diagnoses a common feature of PHTS.
PTEN Hamartoma Tumor Syndrome (PHTS) is a rare genetic predisposition that results in a broad spectrum of diseases and is caused by a germline pathogenic variant in the PTEN gene. PHTS patients have a strong increased risk for several types of cancer and can present with various benign neoplasia, skin lesions, macrocephaly and developmental delay.
Currently, many people with PHTS are recognised as such. This means that many PHTS patients do not receive the surveillance and treatment they need, and patients may develop conditions that possible could have been prevented or be diagnosed at an earlier stage. Most of the disease characteristics of PHTS are on their own common in the general population which hampers recognition of these rare PHTS patients. In addition, each disease expression of PHTS is diagnosed by different health care disciplines and at different ages, such as skin lesions (dermatologist), vascular malformation (radiologist), developmental delay (neurology), an enlarged thyroid (endocrinologist) or breast cancer (oncologist/surgeon).
In a large cohort of PHTS patients and PTEN-negative control patients extended clinical characteristics will be collected and assessed. The best performing clinical criteria will be assessed for further implementation. The PhD candidate is supervised by Prof. Nicoline Hoogerbrugge (medical specialist and professor in Hereditary Cancer) and Dr. Janet Vos (postdoc and epidemiologist).
This PhD project (PIPGEN - PhD Project 3) is part of the PIPgen project (“PIPgen - PI3K/PTEN-related monogenic disease to understand cancer"), an Innovative Training Network funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 offering 15 PhD fellowships to train Early Stage Researchers in the field of PI3K/PTEN related diseases.
The PIPgen project network offers a very competitive 3-year full-time contract in one of the 11 world-leading European institutions from the network. Selected candidates will carry out secondments in other European institutions within the network to achieve research and training excellence, and to improve their future career perspectives both in academia and in the private sector.
Tasks and responsibilities
- Setting up and conducting scientific research within the field of hereditary cancer and epidemiology.
- Implementation and coordination of data collection in a local and European context, such as clinical data, questionnaire research and national registries.
- Data analysis of clinical data and questionnaire data.
- Presenting research results during internal and external meetings and (international) conferences.
- Writing scientific publications.
- Possibility to follow courses to (further) develop relevant skills.
- Possibility to (co-) supervise bachelor or master students during their scientific internship.
- Working in a multidisciplinary team including researchers, epidemiologists, biologists, molecular geneticists, clinical geneticists, psychologists, radiologists and gynecologists.
- Working and collaborating within an international project.
- Complete the project with a dissertation.

The department has ample experience in clinical cancer genetics, from recognition to diagnostic germline testing, phenotyping, genotyping, treatment and surveillance of patients.
Within the department, a broad spectrum of research is carried out into hereditary cancer: 'from molecule to man to population', in which there is close collaboration between the various disciplines. This PhD project operates in the spectrum: 'man to population'.
At the moment there are more than 1,300 PhD candidates at our medical hospital. This number includes PhD candidates on our pay roll as well as external candidates (those employed somewhere else but researching on our premises).

You are a dynamic and enthusiastic PhD candidate who works accurately and in a structured way. You have good communication skills, both in Dutch and English. You can work independently as well as collaborate in a multidisciplinary team within a European context.
- You can understand written Dutch.
- You have completed a master's degree in Biomedical Sciences, Epidemiology, Medicine or in a similar field.
- You have affinity with epidemiological research and an interest in epidemiology and hereditary cancer syndromes.
- Experience with research, data collection and data management is preferred.
- Experience with data analysis (in particular R) is a preferred.
- You may not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the Netherlands for more than 12 months in the last three years.
- You are an early-stage researchers (ESR), i.e. at the date of recruitment (ITN), in the first four years (full-time equivalent research experience) of your research career and have not been awarded a doctoral degree.
