Over Tim olde Hartman
Tim olde Harman is an associate Principal Investigator and chair of the Primary Care Research Group at the Department of Primary and Community Care. As dedicated general practitioner running his own private practice and as scientific primary care researcher, he is fascinated by person-centered care, or personalized healthcare.
After he obtained his PhD in 2011, he formed his own research group on ‘persistent symptoms and therapeutic context’, currently consisting of 11 PhD students and 2 postdoctoral researchers. His research group ‘persistent symptoms and therapeutic context’ focuses on Medically Unexplained Symptoms (MUS) in primary care and the efficacy of common factors and non-specific elements in the primary care consultation. Studying person-centered care, or personalized healthcare is at the core of the research group. Personal attention to patients, a continuing relationship and partnership with patients and mutual trust are crucial elements in healthcare. However, most research in specialty and primary care settings nowadays is focused on specific diseases and not on the core values of being a doctor; giving personalized health care to our patients. Therefore, the research group focuses research on the therapeutic benefits of the consultation itself, in which doctor-patient communication and doctor-patient relationship are at the core of our research expertise.
In the past 5 years, he received multiple highly competitive research grants, published > 65 papers in peer-reviewed international journals, authored several chapters in books and supervised 13 PhD students. He initiated close collaboration internationally (EAMP, EURONET-SOMA and WONCA), nationally (VUmc, UMCG, and the Netherlands Institute for Health Service Research (NIVEL)) and interfaculty (both Center of Language Studies and Behavioural Science Institute of Radboud University and the Interdisciplinary Centre Psychopathology and Emotion regulation (ICPE) of UMC Groningen).
His international recognition resulted in chairing the international board of the North American Primary Care Research Group (NAPCRG), a prestigious group of international highly recognized primary care researchers. Recently he was appointed as an associate editor of the international peer-reviewed journal BMC Family Practice.
