In scientific research, a focused research question and a sound methodology are crucial for achieving valid results. Designing a high quality scientific study and recognizing possible biases are often difficult topics for both researchers and non-researchers. To provide tools for this, a new course 'Methods for design of applied clinical research' will be launched in January 2024.

This course aims at the design of scientific research. Topics include choosing the appropriate design for a specific research question, advanced study designs for randomized and non-randomized trials (e.g. stepped-wedge trials, interrupted time series) and observational studies (e.g. case-cohort, nested case-control). Furthermore, the course focusses on selecting the study population and applying sampling methods, different types of bias, and models for causality. In this unique course we teach participants to optimize the methodological research design and data collection of a study and to critically reflect on scientific articles. You will also have the opportunity to refine the methodology of your own research proposal under the guidance of experienced epidemiologists and methodologists. The target groups for this course are PhD students, post-docs, healthcare professionals, policy makers, and anyone who wants to increase his/her knowledge of research methodology and epidemiology.
