Radboudumc is part of the Radboud University Medical Center Foundation. The Radboudumc Executive Board is the statutory board of this foundation. The Supervisory Board is the supervisory body of Radboudumc and therefore of the foundation, as required by law.
Structure of the organization
Radboudumc broadly consists of:
- 11 centers for patient care,
- 41 departments (including 3 scientific departments),
- 3 institutes (one for each core task),
- and the staff services.
-
Radboudumc has 41 departments that focus on the core tasks of patient care, education, and research: 3 scientific departments and 38 medical departments.
Medical departments
There are 38 medical departments for medical professional development. The departments are ultimately responsible for the quality and safety of individual care. Together with the centers, they are responsible for the content of the care.
From the medical departments, our academic professionals - such as medical specialists, technical physicians, and clinical physicists - contribute to care, education, and research. They work from the medical department in one or more centers, in a research group, and/or as trainers at the Radboudumc Health Academy. The medical departments also employ scientists in department-specific fields who are fully dedicated to research and education. The head of department discusses the provision of care and its quality with the management of a center.
These are the medical departments of Radboudumc:
Department of Anesthesiology, Pain and Palliative Medicine Department of Otorhinolaryngology Department of Orthopedic Surgery Department of Pharmacy, Pharmacology and Toxicology Department of Pediatrics Department of Pathology Department of Medical Imaging Department of Laboratory Medicine Department of Plastic Surgery Department of Cardiology Department of Pulmonology Department of Psychiatry Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology Department of Radiotherapy Department of Dermatology Department of Medical Microbiology Department of Rheumatology Department of Primary and Community Care Department of Medical Oncology Department of Rehabilitation Department of Human Genetics Department of Medical Psychology Department of Emergency Medicine Department of Geriatrics Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department of Dentistry Department of Surgery Department of Neurosurgery Department of Urology Department of Hematology Department of Neurology Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Department of Intensive Care Department of Nephrology Department of Spiritual Care Department of Internal Medicine Department of Ophthalmology Scientific departments
There are three scientific departments: IQ Health, Medical BioSciences, and Medical Neuroscience. The scientists and supporting research colleagues in these three departments contribute to research and education. The scientific departments do not provide patient care.
Management
The departments report directly to the Executive Board. The head of a department is (usually) a professor. The department heads are assisted in their operational tasks by an operations manager. The departmental management is accountable to the Executive Board for the development of the specialty, education and research, and personnel strategy; for the organization, quality, and safety of the department's specialist medical care; and for the department's strategic and financial plan.

All patient care takes place in the 11 centers. Together with the departments, the centers are responsible for the content of the care. In addition, the centers are responsible for the organization of care; all so-called care facilities - such as nursing wards and outpatient clinics - belong to the centers, for example.
Colleagues and specialists work together in the centers, in close connection with education and research relevant to the center.
These are the 11 centers for patient care:
- Radboudumc Amalia Children’s Hospital
- Radboudumc Center for Abdominal and Pelvine Care
- Radboudumc Center for Acute and Critical Care
- Radboudumc Center for Brain and Senses
- Radboudumc Center for Cardiovascular Care
- Radboudumc Center for Diagnostics and Counseling
- Radboudumc Center for Inflammation, Infection and Immunity
- Radboudumc Center for Orofacial Care
- Radboudumc Center for Oncology
- Radboudumc Center for Integrated Care
- Radboudumc Center for Trauma, Reconstructive surgery and Movement
Management
The centers have collegial management teams, consisting of a medical director, a business director, and a nursing director.
-
There is one institute for each core task of Radboudumc: patient care, research, and education & training. These three institutes develop general frameworks to provide high-quality, innovative care, education, and research. They also manage facilities and offer specific support for care, education, and research.
Radboudumc Research Institute for Medical Innovation
The institute responsible for all our scientific research is the Radboudumc Research Institute for Medical Innovation. This institute is led by a collegial management team consisting of a director of research, a director of operations, and a director of knowledge strategy. The research institute is responsible for: the main lines of research policy (and advising the dean/vice-chair of the Executive Board on this), further elaboration of research and valorization policy within the frameworks established by the dean/vice-chair, and the coordination, organization, support, evaluation, and quality assurance of scientific research and the realization of its impact.
Radboudumc Health Academy
All our education and training activities are brought together in the Radboudumc Health Academy (institute for education and training), including academic programs, advanced medical training, advanced training for nurses and paramedics, and continuing education and refresher courses for all professionals. The Radboudumc Health Academy is led by a collegial management team consisting of a director of education and training and a director of operations.
Radboudumc Institute for Patient Care
There is also an institute for our core task of patient care: the Radboudumc Institute for Patient Care. Among other things, this institute is responsible for translating Radboudumc's strategy into patient care and organizing generic frameworks and policy-making that lead to better and more uniform responses to the care needs of patients and society. The institute also promotes the harmonization of primary and support processes and is responsible for sharing facilities. The institute focuses on the following areas: sustainable care, transmural care, nursing & paramedical care, quality and safety of care, generic care facilities and care support, care logistics and capacity management, and technical medicine. The Radboudumc Institute for Patient Care is led by a collegial management team consisting of a medical director, a director of operations, and a director of nursing affairs.

The staff departments advise and support the Executive Board and the organization as a whole:
- Finance Staff Department
- Human Resources Staff Department
- Information Management Staff Department
- Services and Facilities Staff Department
- Strategy Staff Department (including Communication)
- Construction Affairs Staff Department
- Corporate Affairs Staff Department
Each staff department is headed by a director who reports directly to the Board of Directors. In addition, the Audit & Risk department also supports the Board of Directors and the organization as a whole.
-
Radboudumc has five advisory and consultative bodies:
- Works Council (OR). Together with the four Subcommittees (OCs), the OR forms the elected representation of all Radboudumc employees. The OR deals with organization-wide issues, while the OCs deal with issues at the level of the various organizational units. Employee participation is most effective when it is involved in processes at an early stage. In doing so, the OR constantly seeks to strike a balance between the interests of the employees and those of the organization.
- Patient Advisory Council (PAR). Within the framework of the Healthcare Institutions Client Participation Act, the Patient Advisory Council (PAR) advises the Executive Board, both on request and on its own initiative, from the patient's perspective. In addition, the PAR is increasingly involved in the organization's policy proposals and projects on request. Read more about the PAR.
- Staff Council. The Staff Council is the advisory and participation body for medical specialists and equivalent professionals. It represents approximately 850 healthcare professionals. The Staff Council is an independent body that, as one of the components of the organization, contributes to administrative decision-making by providing solicited and unsolicited advice to the Executive Board on topics that affect Radboudumc as a whole, thereby contributing to the management of the academic hospital. The focus of the Staff Council is on monitoring, improving, and safeguarding the quality of care and creating the right conditions for healthcare professionals to provide high-quality care and perform their other core tasks (education and research). In addition, the Staff Council is involved in shaping and monitoring the connection between the three core tasks, strategic developments and choices in all core tasks, maintaining contacts with staff boards of other hospitals, and financial and organizational frameworks at Radboudumc.
- Advisory Council for Nurses & Paramedics (VAR). The VAR advises the Executive Board on strategic developments at Radboudumc in relation to the professional conduct of nurses and paramedics. When formulating its advice, it works closely with VAR ambassadors and other healthcare professionals involved, to ensure a broad-based and practice-oriented perspective.
- UMC Council. The UMC Council is a consultative body and the joint faculty meeting. Its objective is to monitor and promote policy and quality in the areas of our core tasks: research, education, and training, whether or not related to patient care. The UMC Council deals with organization-wide issues and exchanges ideas with, for example, the Executive Board, the constituency directly involved in research, education, training, and patient care, policy officers from Radboudumc and Radboud University, the University Joint Assembly, and the rector magnificus. The UMC Council consists of 24 members, elected by and from various electoral groups, to ensure a balanced distribution.
