As of September 1, 2025, Mark Timmerman has been appointed Head of the Dentistry Department and Professor of Dentistry, with a special focus on Periodontology. He succeeds Marie-Charlotte Huysmans, who held the position on an interim basis for the past two years.
Mark Timmerman (64) graduated cum laude in Dentistry from the University of Amsterdam (UvA) in 1984. He then combined his work as a general practice dentist with clinical research at the Academic Centre for Dentistry Amsterdam (ACTA). In 2001, he was recognized as a periodontist by the Dutch Society of Periodontology (NVvP). A periodontist is a specialized dentist who focuses on treating the gums and supporting structures (jawbone) of teeth, including the placement of implants.
Timmerman continued his career at ACTA as a researcher, supervisor, and lecturer. From 2003 to 2006, he served as a Senior University Lecturer (UHD) at ACTA and worked as an NVvP-certified periodontist at the Paropractice in Utrecht until 2006. Since 2008, he has been practicing at the Clinic for Periodontology and Implantology in Nijmegen and Horst, where he remains active to this day.
In 2017, he returned to academic dentistry as a lecturer in Implantology and Periodontology at Radboud University Medical Center (Radboudumc). Since 2021, he has chaired the Dentistry Examination Board. In 2022, he was appointed Professor of Periodontology. Mark aims to revitalize periodontology education in the Netherlands and use his clinical experience to conduct research into improving treatments for the tissues surrounding teeth and implants.
Timmerman on his appointment: 'I’ve been part of Radboudumc for several years now and know the Dentistry Department well. I look forward to working with my colleagues on the exciting combination of research, education, and patient care within the department.'
The Executive Board is confident that Mark Timmerman, with his extensive experience, will be an excellent fit for this position and wishes him every success.
