Professor of Internal Medicine Saskia Middeldorp is the new president of the Dutch Society of Internal Medicine (NIV), which represents the interests of more than 4,000 members. Saskia Middeldorp, who is also head of the Department of Internal Medicine at Radboud university medical center, was appointed on November 24, 2025.
Middeldorp has long been a member of the NIV board. With over 4,000 members, the NIV represents the broad field of internal medicine. The association connects internists across all subspecialties, strengthens the shared foundation of the discipline, and plays an active role in the further development of appropriate, future-oriented specialist care.
In her new role as president of the national professional society, she sees an important role for internists in shaping the health and healthcare of tomorrow. Middeldorp: 'As head of the Department of Internal Medicine, I deal with issues that are important to all internists in the Netherlands. That’s why I look forward to my presidency of the Dutch Society of Internal Medicine.' She aims to foster a safe, diverse, and inclusive society where every member feels seen and can contribute to both the broad and specialized future of the profession.
International recognition for research on hereditary thrombosis
Saskia Middeldorp’s research focuses on the prevention and treatment of hereditary thrombophilia and thrombosis, conditions in which blood clots block blood vessels and impede blood flow. Her work examines genetic predisposition and addresses questions specific to women, such as during pregnancy. She also conducts large international studies on how new medications that prevent or treat blood clots can be used safely and effectively.
Recently, Middeldorp delivered the Sol Sherry Distinguished Lecture in Thrombosis at the American Heart Association (AHA) conference, an honor recognizing her research and care for women with hereditary thrombosis. Thanks to her work, guidelines on thrombosis in pregnant women have been revised.
