News items Radboudumc provides explanation for decision regarding lecture

29 August 2025

Radboudumc has decided not to provide a room for a lecture on the medical response to the events of October 7, 2023. We understand that this decision raises questions and would like to explain our considerations.

Careful deliberation
We carefully assessed the request for this lecture. The topic—medical response in crisis situations—is undoubtedly important and relevant to the medical field.

However, by linking this topic to the events of October 7, the lecture inevitably becomes part of the broader societal debate surrounding the conflict between Israel and Hamas.

Our responsibility
As an academic medical center, we have responsibilities toward several groups:

  • Patients who must be able to receive care in peace
  • Staff who must be able to work in a safe environment
  • Students who must be able to focus on their education

The societal tension surrounding this topic may lead to situations that disrupt the calm within our hospital. This risk carries significant weight in our decision.

Academic freedom and duty of care
We place great value on academic freedom and the sharing of medical knowledge. At the same time, as a hospital, we must remain a neutral, safe environment where everyone—regardless of background or belief—feels welcome.

No room for discrimination
We want to be very clear that our decision has nothing to do with the nationality or background of the speaker. At Radboudumc, everyone is welcome, and we firmly reject any form of discrimination. We also collaborate daily with colleagues and students from all over the world. This international cooperation is essential to the advancement of medical science.
