Two young, promising Radboud researchers will receive a Rubicon grant from NWO, enabling them to do their research at international top research institutes. The Rubicons are granted to Hassiba Beldjoud, neuroscientist at the Radboudumc, and language scientist Pablo Irizarri van Suchtelen from Radboud University.

In total, twenty-two researchers who have recently received their PhDs are awarded a Rubicon grant by NWO. Brief descriptions of the two research proposals from Radboud researchers who were awarded funding are provided below.

Drug addiction, the infernal cycle
Abstinence is a continuous battle for addicted patients, mostly because of the emergence of craving and negative emotional states, which precipitate relapse. In her research at the Radboudumc, Hassiba Beldjoud interferes with the stress-noradrenergic system to reduce these symptoms, thereby preventing craving and relapse. She will continue her work at the National Institute on Drug Abuse in Baltimore – part of the USA’s National Institutes of Health - for two years.

Romani in Chile: the complexity of bilingualism
The Romani in Chile are fully bilingual. Their language of origin Romani appears to have adopted complex Spanish forms. How can that have occurred? And what is happening to their Spanish? For Pablo Irizarri van Suchtelen, researcher at Radboud University’s Centre for Language Studies, the Romani population offers unique possibilities to understand bilingualism and language development. He will work at the Langues et Civilizations à Tradition Orale research group at the French Centre National de Recherche Scientifique for two years.
