According to Maartje Loeffen female victims of intimate partner violence need low threshold personalized support that matches their personal situation and needs.

Mentor mother support in family practice offers low threshold support to mothers who are victims of intimate partner violence. This personalized intervention focuses on empowerment of the abused woman and focuses on the themes safety, depression, social support and children who witness the violence. Mentor mothers and abused mothers meet each other weekly during 16 weeks. Mentor mothers are non-professionals who are trained and supervised by a professional, to support this group of women.
The results of Maartje’s thesis show that a personalized intervention, that matches the personal situation and needs of the woman, is needed. Furthermore mentor mothers are complementary to the professional support that is offered. By being non-professionals, mentor mothers offer support that is less threatening than professional support and more easily accepted.

Maartje Loeffen defended her PhD thesis successfully on 20 December 2017.
