During 2019 and 2020, as the Radboudumc Postdoc Initiative (RPI), we performed a survey among postdocs. This has always been a hot topic and has been common in the RPI committee meetings. For this reason, we decided to ask the Radboudumc postdoc community to have a broad view of this. The survey was sent to approximately 400 postdocs from RIHS, RIMLS, and DCMN in our mailing list. Despite a low response rate (~20%), and therefore maybe a biased sample, it is still relevant/interesting to share these results with the whole Radboudumc community. Curious about what we found out? We present you some of the data we collected in the infographic below!
We have taken several actions at the RPI in order to tackle this matter. In 2020, during the annual meeting with the Research Directors, we informed them and more attention will be paid in the coming years. This topic was also discussed with PhD councils and policy advisors within the joint meetings. In fact, HR is putting activities in place to improve vitality in employees with the projects ‘A vibrant workplace’ and the ‘vitality week’ where they offer courses, webinars, talks, and information on how to maintain a good work-private life balance throughout all the life stages. Furthermore, they also have confidential advisors for personalized advice. Currently, they want to better approach the internationals, and they are working on offering more of these courses and information in English.
From the RPI, we focused our bi-annual retreat on work-life balance, which took place on the 8th of June of 2021. It was an insightful day with workshops and talks on discovering career goals, project management, and ‘how to survive a postdoc’. Moreover, we also presented the new Postdoc Office that will be set up this October 2021 to offer support and a career development plan. The research institutes will organize the college tour focused on this theme on October 6, 2021. So, keep an eye on the research newsletter.
If you have more ideas on how to tackle these challenges, please contact us at the RPI (radboudpostdocinitiative@radboudumc.nl) or become a member of our committee to continue working for the well-being of our postdocs in the Radboudumc!
