News items Beyond the scientist: Niek Hugen

Niek Hugen, surgical resident and researcher

Where and when were you born?

I was born 27 years ago in the green wilderness of the Achterhoek.

Where do you live and with whom?

I live in Nijmegen, together with my girlfriend, who works in Radboud university medical center as well.

Who was your role model when you were a kid?

Although I never had one particular role model during childhood, I have always been fascinated by people who outshine in whatever they do. This may vary from brilliant sportsmen to great scientists, actors or writers. I am intrigued by their talent and even more by their perseverance in reaching their next goal.

Why aren’t you doing the same thing now as your role model (or do you?)

Given the couple dozen of role models I have had, I am currently coping with the fact that I will have to let go on becoming a world leading tennis player (should have taken lessons) or next pop idol (can’t even sing in key). I guess I will stick to the plan of a clinical surgical career in combination with research.

What is the thing in your work history that you are most proud of?

This January I defended my PhD thesis. The defence itself as well as the feast afterward were fantastic. My PhD has been an excellent time in my career, during which I worked together with talented people and felt free to dig into whatever I considered interesting (obviously some things had to be done).

For what can we wake you up?

Since my sleep is highly appreciated, rather not wake me up.

What is your hobby and how good are you at it?

I love some physical exercise after a day in the hospital. Especially running helps to clear the mind.

Who would you like to invite for dinner, if you had the chance?

In fact I/we simply love to have our friends over for dinner. A late evening dinner with good food, wine and friends is the best start of the weekend.
