Medical ethicists Jelle van Gurp and Gert Olthuis (dept. IQ healthcare) have received a grant of €391.000,- from the ZonMw Palliantie program. Developing a graphic novel about informal care for palliative patients. In the project they will collaborate, among others, with the Radboud Expertise Center of Pain and Palliative Medicine, KU Leuven, Movisie in Utrecht and the ArtEZ art academy in Zwolle.

Invisible care Informal care by family members for severely ill patients who receive palliative care is often invisible. The funded study aims to uncover this hidden but valuable informal care by developing a empirically grounded graphic novel. Drawn stories The project will provide insight into societal narratives on the end of life on the basis of an analysis of the ways the end of life is framed in Dutch media. Additionally, we will interview various informal caregivers and palliative care patients to explore personal narratives, asking for relations, roles and personal experiences. The results of these analyses will be incorporated into a graphic novel with four drawn stories that will make the meaning and practice of informal care in the palliative phase easily accessible. The book will be used in various ‘experimental gardens’ to promote public awareness of this issue of great social relevance.
