Nicole van de Kar medical specialistNicole van de Kar is a pediatric nephrologist and staff member of the department of pediatric nephrology at the Radboudumc. She obtained her PhD in 1994 (cum laude) with a thesis on the pathophysiology of the hemolytic uremic syndrome caused by shiga-toxin producing E.coli infections. She currently coordinates several research projects , in particular optimalizing the eculizumab treatment in aHUS and research on basic mechanisms, assay development and diagnostic toolbox for complement mediated disorders (COMBAT).
Her current interests include the pathophysiology of the hemolytic uremic syndromes in particular the hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) caused by shiga toxin producing E.coli (STEC) infections and the atypical HUS caused by dysregulation of the complement system as well as the complement mediated renal disorders C3 glomerulopathy. The laboratory she works for, performs the clinic-immunological and genetic diagnostics for HUS and C3G in the Netherlands.
