Sarcomas are rare, malignant tumors in bones and soft tissue. They represent only 1.5% of all types of cancer. In the Netherlands, there are approximately 200 patients a year with malignant bone tumors and 700 patients with malignant tumors in soft tissue. Almost 20% occurs in patients younger than 18 years of age.
Experience
Every year, approximately 450 patients are treated by various specialists at Radboudumc's center of expertise in sarcomas. As a result, the treatment team has a great deal of experience with these rare tumors, and we have all the facilities to provide timely, effective and personalized care for this group of patients. The departments involved have been fulfilling this role for more than thirty years, with the support of Radboudumc's Centre for Oncology.
The Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport has acknowledged our center of expertise as the center of expertise for sarcomas.
Our expertise
The treatment of sarcomas is very diverse and complex. In-depth operations are often required. In most cases, several care professionals are involved in the treatment of a patient. They treat a relatively large number of patients with sarcoma. All patients are discussed in a multidisciplinary consultation before and after treatment. As a result, all care professionals involved with the center of expertise have extensive knowledge and experience in the field:
- diagnostics, treatment, and follow-up
- age-specific care, including care for children and AYAs (Adolescents & Young Adults 18-35)
- practical and psychological support
- academic research
- education
