News items Lowlands Science 2025: A MENstrual Experience

19 August 2025

Last weekend, researchers from Radboudumc were at Lowlands Science with their project ‘A MENstrual Experience’. This project focuses on the possible relationship between menstrual symptoms and the vaginal microbiome.

With this research, we not only want to gain more insight into the causes of menstrual pain, but also raise awareness about menstrual symptoms and conditions such as endometriosis. Curious to see what it looked like? Check out the atmosphere here!

Every day there was a long line in front of the container! That yielded us no fewer than 250 vaginal swabs. A lot of valuable research data!

Frédérique van Berkestijn, member of the Executive Board, and Alexandra van Huffelen, chair of the Radboud University Executive Board, also took a look at the project.

Principal investigator Emma Huijs with gynecologist Janneke Hoogstad-van Evert from Amphia Hospital.

The container was decorated with special illustrations created by KUT.illustraties

In addition to taking vaginal swabs, we also had a menstruation simulator. This allowed men to experience what menstrual pain feels like.

Or together!

To ease the pain of the menstruation simulator, these candies were handed out. Totally in style!

The project also received a lot of media attention. For example, NOS Stories came by to make a fun item for their Instagram and TikTok channel.

And Hart van Nederland as well.

The reporter from BNR Nieuwsradio also had to face the music.
